It is no secret that the Arabian Gulf States are feeling the pinch from the Global meltdown. Its once booming economies, fuelled by record-high oil prices and a bustling real-estate market, have cooled considerably. Shipping had been rapidly gaining prominence in the region before the world economy soured. But despite the generally pessimistic financial outlook, the prospects still look positive. Middle Eastern Shipowners appear well placed to ride out whatever storm shipping is currently experiencing. Ambitious growth plans may have to be restrained and earnings expectations reduced but it is clear that the region regards what is happening as a mere glitch in the overall long-term picture.
